Walk For Kids Wyndham

Jul 27, 2023

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It was another rainy day at the Wyndham Championship golf tournament, but fans didn’t let a little rain get in the way of seeing some of their favorite golfers.

D.J. Gregory was there for more than good golf, he’s raising money for kids with special needs by walking with a golfer.

Gregory has cerebral palsy, and he doesn’t let his disability get in his way.

“My legs were entangled when I was born. And that your abductor muscle is the muscle that controls your balance. And so since mine was cut, it means I have no balance. So that's why I walk with a cane,” Gregory said.

He had 11 surgeries growing up.

“I was 2 years old. The doctors told my parents I would never walk,” Gregory said.

But, now he walks all the time, especially at golf events raising money to help others.

“Each week I follow a different golfer and support them on the golf course, and they make a donation to my foundation. And we give the money to different organizations that help kids with special needs,” Gregory said.

He started this back in 2008 for what he says were selfish reasons, so he could get to know the players on a more personal level outside of their scorecards, but that turned into something more meaningful.

“I got such positive response in 2008 that the end of 2009 I decided what else could I do to motivate and inspire others? And that's how the Walking for Kids Foundation started,” Gregory said.

Gregory does 48 events a year and walks more than 1,100 miles.

“I love what I do. I don't work for a living. I play for a living. And I get to give out a lot of money. So it's pretty awesome,” Gregory said.

And his foundation helps all kids with special needs.

“Raising money to help kids with special needs achieve their goals and dreams. That's what it's all about, because I believe everybody has a goal and a dream and everybody should be given their rightful chance to achieve those goals and dreams,” Gregory said.

Gregory has raised more than $1.3 million for kids with special needs.
